The effect of F0 peak-delay on the L1 / L2 perception of English lexical stress
نویسندگان
چکیده
This study investigated the perceptual effect of F0 peakdelay on L1 / L2 perception of English lexical stress. A bisyllabic English non-word ‘nini’ /nInI/ whose F0 was set to reach its peak in the second syllable was embedded in a frame sentence and used as the stimulus of the perceptual experiment. Native English and Japanese speakers were asked to determine lexical stress locations in the experiment. The results showed that in the perception of English lexical stress, delayed F0 peaks which were aligned with the second syllable of the stimulus words perceptually affected Japanese and English groups in the same manner: both groups perceived the delayed F0 peaks as a cue to lexical stress in the first syllable when the peaks were aligned with, or before, the end of /n/ in the second syllable. A supplementary experiment conducted on Japanese speakers confirmed the location of the categorical boundary. These findings are supported by the data provided by previous studies on L1 acoustic analysis and on L1 / L2 perception of intonation.

L1/L2 Perception of Lexical Stress with F0 Peak-Delay: Effect of an Extra Syllable Added
This study addressed the problems of our previous study [5] and investigated the perceptual effect of F0 peak-delay on L1 / L2 perception of English lexical stress. A trisyllabic English nonsense word ‘ninini’ /nInInI/ whose F0 was set to reach its peak around the second syllable was embedded in a frame sentence and used as the stimulus of the perceptual experiment. Native English and Japanese ...
متن کاملProduction of English Lexical Stress by Persian EFL Learners
This study examines the phonetic properties of lexical stress in English produced by Persian speakers learning English as a foreign language. The four most reliable phonetic correlates of English lexical stress, namely fundamental frequency, duration, intensity, and vowel quality were measured across Persian speakers’ production of the stressed and unstressed syllables of five English disyllabi...
متن کاملL2 Stress Perception: The reliance on different acoustic cues
Second language learners of English often experience difficulties in English lexical stress perception because of prosodic transfer of their first language (L1). It has thus been hypothesized that the problem of Chinese learners with English stress arises from tonal transfer. However, little research has been devoted to the investigation of the phonetic details of second language (L2) stress pe...
متن کاملDoes Second Language Experience Modulate Perception of Tones in a Third Language?
It is unclear what roles native language (L1) and second language (L2) play in the perception of lexical tones in a third language (L3). In tone perception, listeners with different language backgrounds use different fundamental frequency (F0). While English listeners use F0 height, Mandarin listeners rely more on F0 direction. The present study addresses whether knowledge of Mandarin, particul...
متن کاملWritten word recognition by the elementary and advanced level Persian-English bilinguals
According to a basic prediction made by the Revised Hierarchical Model (RHM), at early stages of language acquisition, strong L2-L1 lexical links are formed. RHM predicts that these links weaken with increasing proficiency, although they do not disappear even at higher levels of language development. To test this prediction, two groups of highly proficie...
